analysing google analytics

before i redesigned my site it was all in flat html and my analytics were showing approx 300 unique visits via organic keywords. now my site is all in joomla and i have mainly 301 redirects for pages that had backlinks / hotlinks via images to my site.

now, i get approx only 100 unique visitors per day, with 90% direct traffic, and 10% through keyords. why has my direct traffic spiked when i had hardly no direct traffic before? and more importantly why has the direct taffic replaced the organic searches?

Use Piwik instead of Google for analytics (much better) and then you'll be able to set up redirect referrals as a separate stat.

My guess is because of the redirect, the actual referrer becomes the previous domain/URL. In this case there would be no keyword. Possibly because its a 301, it is getting marked as direct rather than a referring site.

So essentially you have something like this:
Google (organic) with keyword > Old Domain/URL > New Domain

The old domain becomes the referrer rather than Google. Therefore there would be no keyword in the referrer string.
