Some chick from Google called me today.

Quite strange hearing from the company that you never hear from.

It was in regards to my adwords account.

But I rencelty had one adwords account shut down entirely (I had two), and my main one had a large campaign shut down.

Because I was promoting something they didn't dig.

And I told her this

She said it wasn't regarding that, but mainly just to give me feedback on my campaigns.. to help me out or something.

She wants to talk on Mon.

anyone else get any of these courtesy calls? Weird.

You will find at your meeting that she is actually just an authorised Google Adwords provider and not from Google at all. Listen very carefully at what she is offering you because these companies can take advantage of you if you are unaware of what you are getting.

Pay particular attention to the traffic for the specific keywords being offered.

I'm not saying they are dodgy but some of them are. Making you believe they are from Google is a red flag though.

(I get the sample calls and emails pretty often).

I think this clarifies the situation, no need to waste your time any further...

There's a lot of companies in MTV... in fact, you don't have to be located in MTV to have a number from MTV...

Note to self - get that next skype # in Mountain View or Newport beach next to a google plex - for all those offline rubes who'd believe I AM a google employee.

This scam is as old as Toner Cartridges ...

That does sound weird. I would be suspicious of a phishing scam.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3909963].message }}

They aren't phishing. They are either a legitimate Adwords provider misrepresenting themselves as Google; or they are misrepresenting themselves as Google with the intention to sign the end user up for a managed Adwords account that will provide them very little (or no) value for money.

The second one is usual lead by "we can get you to the front page of Google for any keyword!".

    Weird
I dind't think it was a scammer .. and I believed it was Google.

And when I look up the number, it is from Mountain View CA, where GOogle is from.

But I just called her and she said "This is Suzanna" .. but didn't say Google.

    Strange.

I had a similar call some months ago, and they arranged call back and did a tutorial with me and gave me some useful info on my ads etc...

      Then...

      Sales call!

      Followed by managers sales call..

      10 more calls

And some being very aggressive about the tutorial they had given me.

I find it worrying that google would allow themselves to be linked to these firms

Well you at least know there are some dodgy practises out there so you can go into the meeting with a skeptical mind. Tell her that you would like some identification (even just an email) as you want to be sure you are talking to a Google representative.

Ask her for an email, If the email isn't a @google.com forget them (just another sales pitch).

The part about already knowing your Adwords user name is strange.

If she is working with Google she won't have any problem providing proof from someone inside google with a google.com email.

Don't go by the phone # location, anyone can get a # from Mountain View CA.

you already know... dont give passwords, dont pay anything to her even if she sounds relly convincing, in other words stay away from scams...

because if Google really wanted to tell you something they would have send an envelope to you, not a call..

4morereferrals: newport beach is about 7 hours away from Mountain View.

But thanks for everyone's feedback. Probably bogus. Good, I didn't want them trolling around in my accounts anyway.

Id be careful. My friend agreed to let them change all his keywords and make them "more targetted" but the end result was a lot lot less traffic and sales.

thats very strange when they shut something down they usually just tell it through mail and squash the chances of getting re-enabled. but if you're a big spender in adwords perhaps it's normal, if not i'd tread carefully for scam

I got call from adwords more than 10 times by now. They keep calling you if you are not an active adwords user or if they have your number save in their directory.

Another tip off to a potential scam is the line "We have a special relationship" with Google or " Authorized Google Partner" - and likely all it really means is they are probably Adwords certified and stretching the truth. It's right up there in terms of sleazyness with "We can guarantee you a page 1 ranking".
