My site danced upward rather than downward

I have a two year old authority site that ranks on the middle of page 2 for most of its keywords. I am on page one for five or six very low volume keywords and one low volume keyword (a few hundred to 4k searches per month).
This evening for a few hours, I went from #15 to #5 for a keyword with 40k monthly searches, then back down to #15. And no, I did not check this with my own browser, this was using Scroogle and Hidemyass.
My inner page for this keyword has a number of handbuilt backlinks (mostly relevant forum post sigs). It also has backlinks from a Squidoo lens. I recently paid a backlinking service to throw 1000 links at the Squidoo lens.
I am hoping that the link juice through the lens is what caused this surge, and that my site will go back up. Still, I've been at #15 for this keyword for about ten weeks, and I expected to go up a little more slow and steady than a quick surge and back down.
Has anyone else experienced this?
