I am sure people debate this all the time.

Dofollow is important however just because a nofollow blog is 'nofollow' it doesn't mean that tons of people don't read it. If people then go to your blog they may run a pingback and your post can go viral.

If you look in yahoo site explorer you will probably find nofollow links and that seems to be what most people use when analysing their competition.

Forget the concept that nofollow are useless. Using too much dofollow will cause your site to suspicious in the eyes of search engines specially Google.

Yes, they say to build both nofollow and dofollow links. And it depends on your goal. everyone has their own theory about how much of each to build. You have to test it out and build your own theories. There isn't any clear cut and dry answers here.

I totally agree. You have to test. That's one of the staples of quality marketing. Much else is just luck.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you're building them yourself, is to make sure they're actually good comments. You can tell when a comment is fake/spammy. So can the person whose blog you're posting on.

      All the best.

do follow and no follow BOTH optimize your site for the search engines, and count as backlinks. However, do follow links give you "link juice" to help improve your PR, no follow doesn't. Thats the only difference.

No Follow DOES help in rankings. I ranked a site with relevant no follow links alone.
Do Follow links do them and they also pass PR. Thats the only difference.
