Press Releases - What do you do?

Hey Guys,

Although I've been doing SEO for quite awhile I've never gotten into the press release thing. One of my better sites just hit 1 year old a few weeks back so I thought I'd do a press release on it to see how it works out.

Do you use free services? If so which ones?

Do you use paid services? If so which ones and why are they better than the free?

Anyone you would recommend to write them?

I would use PR web. They are not free and might seem expensive but it is worth it. They have a very intuitive interfce and there are many options and packages for customising, optimising and targeting your PR. You will get a wide reach with PR web and I have had good results in the past with them. Your PR will get on Google and Yahoo news which it won't with most free servics and they haev 24 hour support.

What more do you want (apart from all that for free)

I have used FREE press releases and have found very little use! On average we have used a few press release sites that charge about $300 each release and we had great results. I can't remember the exact names though.

PRWeb is probably the best source out there, and they're not that expensive for all that they do. They have packages starting at $50 per release, which is a pretty good deal considering everything they include. In my experience (ten years of journalistic writing and submissions of press releases) PRWeb is the best paid source, but there are others out there that are good too- both paid and free. If you do use PRWeb, I would recommend their SEO level package, which is about $200 and well worth it. (If you have a good press release)

As far as free sites go, a lack of success/results can usually be attributed to one of the following:

a.) Submission of the press release was not EXACTLY according to standards

    0r

b.) Don't have a story that is interesting enough or well-written enough to get picked up

After all, the entire point of press releases is to find journalists that are interested in your press release and don't have to do much (or any) editing in order to release it or create a new story using it.

It's very important that your press release be written by a professional unless you take the time to learn precisely how to write one: editors won't hesitate to drop your file in the trash if it doesn't meet accepted standards. And while these standards are generally the same from place to place, there are nuances that must be accounted for and that takes time to learn.

The following are some good free press release submission sites:

Newswire Today's - Free Press Release & Newswire Distribution Service - NewswireToday - Press Releases News Distribution Network
PR.com: Directory of Businesses Jobs Press Releases Products Services Articles - Find Companies
Free Press Release Distribution & Submission Service
Press Release Service and Distribution - 24-7PressRelease.com
BigNews.biz distributes news and press release
pressbox - free press release distribution and news - press store - copywriting services
    Submit Press Release | PR9.NET
    PR-USA.net
    ClickPress | Global News Distribution
openPR.com - Worldwide Open Public Relations - Publish Press Releases Free of Charge

There are at least another 10 or so free sites worth checking out, but I'll not reveal everything here. ;-)

If you're an SEO and you do this right, you'll be using press releases a whole lot more. Combined with a good article marketing campaign (a REAL article marketing campaign, NOT an ARTICLE DIRECTORY marketing campaign) press releases can have a substantial impact on your ability to dominate a given market/keyword/product/service/niche.

    It's a tricky business though.

Do some research and you can submit your outsourced press releases yourself and save a ton of money. I'd recommend Media Magnet and PressBot. We honestly have no real preference for one or the other in my office.

I personally don't know any press release writers here on the forum, but I'm certain they are around.

Rigmonkey is a great writer but I'm not sure if he does press releases or not.

For more information please PM me.

WOW guys... you are clearly misinformed or suck at press releases. Most of these responses are from people that use profiles for their main source of backlinking.

Whatever though, I don't really care, I just hope some of you are my competition.

Don't think press releases work? I have sites ranking JUST using press releases as a form of backlinks, getting those links syndicated, and creating tremendous link juice. I have made 2K off ONE press release. Possibly more than that, but they were the only ones that directly said they found me from a press release.

You want to make money.... get backlinks... get traffic... and build up your trust rank with google? Then do press releases as part of your marketing. If not, then cool... let me know your niche and I'd love to come in.

You're right, that is one of the advantages.

Press releases were originally meant to generate press, or something that you have news about... in SEO, press releases are an additional way to create traffic, and do link building.

Obviously, you promoting a dofollow forum, you really don't know what kind of juice press releases can generate. 1 link from a press release, is equivalent to 500 from a forum.

That's exactly right but I'll go one step further: they suck at press releases BECAUSE they are misinformed.

        FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

        Press Releases Don't Work

        WARRIOR FORUM, Anywhere Town

A group of geniuses publicly informed a forum of internet marketing professionals today that press releases don't work and never have. This earth shattering announcement exposed the absolute ineffectiveness of all types of media; both online and offline.

However, the elite group stated that press releases could be used to sell products or services and informed unenlightened Warriors that press releases are in reality nothing more than product advertising.

SEO professionals from around the world reacted to the news with panic, with extremely successful businessmen abandoning lucrative practices in light of this new information.

Studies conducted immediately after this announcement indicated that this collective of geniuses were likely responsible for new information related to duplicate content, DoFollow Vs. NoFollow, and the major breakthrough on "building too many links."

It's unclear at this time how this group formulated its revolutionary conclusions, though some early reports indicate that Dr. Richard Nokes of Troy University might have discovered a critical clue:
