Check out David Risley hey has a good blueprint for free if you sign up to his blog. Also subscribe to SEOmoz as they have lots of advanced tips. You can also subscribe to my blog and I will be doing walk-throughs / case studies of exactly how I rank my niche sites and monetize them!

I would say SEOmoz.org is pretty comprehensive, another that I like is Hubspot.com.
The free info sometimes isn't the best, you have to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
The other thing that helped me was just doing it-implementing a strategy then observing what worked and what didn't. Just take baby steps, the only way you can go is up!
