Assessing keyword competition

I got the trial version of Market Samurai and I've been playing around with its keyword research tools in combination with google keyword tools and I'm finding that the competition for just about every phrase of various monetizable niches is extremely competitive in terms of SEO.

I've been trying all kinds of niches and keyword phrases and play on words, gauging both traffic and competition and almost all results return top 10s with thousands if not millions of backlinks, even to PR0 sites.

Even keywords and phrases with only 300 or so global monthly searches are being fiercely competed on.

With such fierce competition for just about any and every monetizable keyword combination in any niche, how does one go about really assessing the competition in these niches?

    start building backlinks on PR5+ sites and you'll do fine!

    1. if your domain is exact as your keyword then consider 50% of the seo already done. Few articles submission and forum backlinks will send your site within top 3 positions of google.

    2. If it's JUST a domain and you're trying to rank in such fierce competition, you really need to spend time and money on search engine optimization (link building is the most important thing). Concentrate on consistent seo for couple of months in this case.
