i have a site dedicated to backpacking tents and i'm having trouble finding blogs related to my niche. i have decided to expand my niche a bit. if i were to get backlinks from camping themed niches, would this be viewed as relevant?

The general rule is: the closer the better. I feel like the usual practice is that you build as much as you can to the sites closest to you, and then work outwards.

However, that said, I would think that something such as camping would be within the ballpark (as it would probably still get you into some domains with a lot of related KWs). Plus, after all, article & social bookmarking sites aren't really in anybody's niche, and they still hold some clout.

Yes it would be relevant. You can choose 2 of the most explored niches- sports and travel.
