Keywords Local Monthly Competition

This is my first post, and i am glad that i am here. I have read a lot of good information, and i am really getting sharpened.
Well, I have been reading about keywords competition, and checking on Local monthly competition column, however, i am getting varying ideas. At one point, one writer advised to have a minimum of 500 while someone else suggested, anything from 3000 to 50,000 is good. So, is there a cut off? what does it depend with?. I am talking keywords with exact match. I have been writing articles but it appears i have not been using the correct numbers. I normally use Google Keyword tool. I would appreciate your response on this, to enable me starting writing articles using the proper competition.
