There is no limit. If only we could get a nonstop number of backlinks.
Oh yeah. We can. It's called linkbait. Would you put up a sign on
your site with a "Do not link. I have reached my monthly limit." ?

    If not, there's your answer.

Some will chime in about consistency. In reality, I aint gonna build
backlinks in the same numbers forever. That's silly. Google loves
    viral.

Build as many as you can.

If you were disappointed in your results today, lower your standards tomorrow.

ok i'll be that person to chime in about consistency... consistency is important, though not in the way most people think... for a new site, i'll start with perhaps 5-10 links a day and go up as I start building some content. I wouldn't put all the content on there all at once either...
If you're using wordpress, use the schedule feature and schedule a post a day or a post every 2 days... once you have some content going for you and it has been indexed perhaps 20 days into your link building campaign, then you can ramp up and start using some automation tools or increase their speed if you were already using them... link breadth is also important. Its not natural if all your links are coming from article directories or social sites or where ever... throw in a few different types of sources into the mix...

where you get into trouble with new sites is when you dont build any links the entire month and then one day you go and buy a link building package to build 10,000 links in 2 days.... that is as unnatural as it gets and is sure to get you sandboxed...

As long as you do things by hand and do not do anything questionable such as automation you will be fine.

Even then people suggest that you would still be fine as if you could get into trouble people would attack each others websites.

I recommend that you focus on slow and stead link building.

I agree with paul. Build backlinks as much as you can. For better results, build good quality backlinks.

As long as you are getting quality, relevant and authority backlinks, it's O.K. You should focus on quality instead of quantity though.

Diversify your link building tactics. Don't concentrate on one specific type of link (bookmark, article, classified etc).

Don't spam thousands and thousands of links too fast, you can get sandboxed (I did an experiement on a new site once). Manually link build quality links or perhaps purchase some of the better services here on the forum. But ultimately, there is no specific limit, just be sensible and remember, links can take weeks or months to be found and will not all be found at the same time!

There is no limit. But some advise. Try not to get spam link. Remember quality is the fact not the quantity. Try to get as much quality links as you can.

Just build backlinks in a diverse fashion and do it consistently day by day and month by month and you should eventually move up in the search engines.

No limit ?? how; I can't agree with this. Bcz when you're going to build maximum links per day, there are high chances to penalize for a website if it's new one.

Quality over quantity. Especially with the recent Google updates. A lot of people say not to worry about consistency. Maybe I'm just paranoid. But I wouldn't create 500 backlinks one day, then let it sit for a week and create 500 more. I'd try to spread it out a bit.

This is just my opinion though.

There is no limit. But you must keep the velocity, quality and quantity. Add 200 or 1000 backlinks one time will be hurt to your website. Instead it you can add 20-100 per days, you need to manage that and outsource is also a good ways.

yeah that proves the point that you dont want unnatural linking...
if a new 2 page sites gets 10,000 links on its second day of being online.. i'd call that unnatural and so would google...
again, they not against a high number of links obviously but they are obviously against those who try to game the system... too many links in an unnatural way is just google's way to determining that this person is using spammy link building techniques especially if the site is small and has no authority...

on the other hand, if the site is well established, it has authority, etc... then a huge number of links wouldn't matter...

So even though Google says there is no such thing as too many links, as long as they aren't web spam, you hold to that belief?

What about meritorious links? How well your website is established, how much authority it has earned has absolutely nothing to do with whether links are meritorious or just crappy web spam.

I think Google sees web spam as spam no matter how few or how fast you create it. Likewise, they see meritorious links as meritorious no matter how many and how fast you create them.

Velocity is what is important. If you have 3000 links first month, 100 next, then 5000 next, some where I'd expect a red flag. If you start with a certain velocity, be able to keep it up. And if you happen to get sandboxed, keep up the same velocity and it'll un-box quick enough. So do what you plan to do for at least the first 6 months.
