Just started monetizing my high traffic site, advice needed

I've got a site built around Wordpress that now gets millions of impressions per month. I've only recently started to monetize it. I threw up some Adsense banners yesterday, and may look into other ad networks.

I understand that it may be possible to "prioritize" banner ads.. meaning that I could go to another network and ask for a high CPM/CPC, and if they're unable to fill it, it defaults back to Adsense. Are there any WP plugins for this? I was thinking about doing it with 4 or 5 networks, though I know Adsense will most likely be shown the majority of the time.

I also recently brokered a small deal with an advertiser directly. I sold him a chunk of impressions at 1.5 CPM (I suspect that this is cheap for him, but I'll wait and see how Adsense performs for this niche before asking for more). I'm concerned about overfilling his order. If he orders 200k impressions, then for now all I can do is put his banner up and try to guess when it will reach that mark. If I overestimate, then I might end up serving him 250-300k. It would be nice if there were some way to automate this process, so that it reverts back to Adsense after the order is filled... perhaps with a WP plugin. I also wonder if it might make more sense to sell banners by clicks, and if so, how could I track them? AND, if going that route, again how could that process be automated.

I'm sure there's other things I need to learn, but that's all the questions I have for now. Thanks guys.

I am sure if you are a premium adense publisher there are many options
    like that within google advertisers.

But incorporating a 3rd party to mix in with adsense would be a violation
of TOS. You cannot have your adsense be involved with any software,
program, script, etc. Besides, it is impossible to tell a high paying ad
from another one on the adsense end of it.

I would sell the banner impressions as an unlimited monthly package.

Rotating back and forth would be fine. But having some other setting
to block adsense specifically IMHO would be a violation of adsense TOS.

    It's true. I don't work for google.

There are many adsense "alternatives" that don't give a hoot.

Hm, okay. I thought using Adsense as a backup ad was very standard. If it's against TOS, I'll definitely steer clear though.

Selling banner ads at a monthly rate doesn't seem realistic, as I'm not sure I'll be able to find advertisers with a large enough budget. Perhaps I could sell smaller lots. Either way, I'm not thrilled with this approach as the pricing will be based on average impressions/CTR, and it will always either underperform or overperform. I may be splitting hairs though.

      Thanks for the input, Paul.

there are several software solutions for setting up and managing pay per click / bid systems. Just as in adwords, people bid on advertisement placements.
There are a few selections here: Download Bid Buy Sell Source Codes, Bid Buy Sell Scripts - Online Store Constructor Asp Edition by newageit.com, Softbiz B2B Trading Marketplace Script by softbizscripts.com and more...

only use the best converting adsense units usually the big square and long unit 728x90 work well for me

Also use text only as I find these get better CTR, and play with the colours of your ads until you find some good CTR
