Best way to research SEO competition

Just starting out with SEO and doing keyword research right now. I use Micro Niche Finder right now for keyword research. Once you run a search it will give you a strength of competition score. Basically a red, yellow or green which makes it simple. MNF's soc score is based upon googles "exact" search results for a particular keyword in quotes. My question is, wouldn't you want to know your competition for a particular keyword exactly as its typed in but no quotes because isn't that how most people search in the internet?

I don't think SOC is based on EXACT count. I don't think SOC changes depending on if you pick broad, phrase or exact. Anyways, if you're looking for how to analyze competition, I recommend you look at this thread http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...vealed-10.html

Using software is fine, but don't relay on 3 color codes. There is more to competition research than what these softwares output. The best way is to look at the backlink count and age of sites currently in the top 10 for your keyword. It'll give you a better picture.
