Why So Much DMOZ.org Traffic?

Usually I am wondering like most folks how to get clients in to DMOZ.org as a strong backlink.

I have recently created a new site for a client in the sweater business and do regular analytics reporting. This business has had a domain and website since 2000, and been in DMOZ.org for a number of years too.

We are getting an extraordinary amount of traffic from DMOZ.org which is GREAT, but I just don't understand why...

Are there shoppers out there that look on dmoz as an information source? Do the dmoz instead of the Google?

I would be grateful if anyone had some insight in to this traffic, if I knew more I might be able to make better use of it.

thanks!

Bill

Good for you if you are having traffic from DMOZ.
I have regularly submitted my site from there but have never had any backlink from there.

My guess is that google is funneling traffic to it via DMOZ.
Google still has a directory, and it's basically a mirror of DMOZ,
complete with links to submit to DMOZ. That said, my answer
has obvious missing pieces. Like your site would need to be
listed in the DMOZ, and how a link out on the google directory looks
like a link out from DMOZ.

      1. Every time you resubmit, you just overwrite the previous submission with the new date (really dumb thing to do)
      2. You may have been blacklisted as a spammer for submitting more than once
      3. The guidelines you agree to when you submit is to do so only once
      4. How do you think any directory should treat those who can not follow the guidelines that they agree to when submitting?

You are your own worst enemy!

I think that google kind a owns DMOZ, because when i go to dir.google.com, when you want to submit a site they redirect you to dmoz.

Google DO NOT own DMOZ. AOL owns DMOZ.

DMOZ produces a weekly RDF dump for anyone to build their own directory from the DMOZ database. Google is just one of ~3000 such users that do so. Part of the attribution that is required as a condition of using the database, is that the suggest URL goes to DMOZ.

I do not think people like you and me even ever bother to search any thing in web directories. to be true directories are useful for getting links only.
Analyze your anaytic report and tally it with webmaster tool report.you might get an idea into the problem and do not confuse between click and impressions.

Ugh...we've tried for years to get our outsourcing company in to DMOZ with no luck.

I originally submitted our site in 2009. Over a year later with nothing, I submitted again towards the end of 2010 and still nothing so far.

I've heard it can take a long time to get into DMOZ, but several years? Is that realistic?
