Directory submission for SEO. Still good?

Hi all,

Is directory submission still working? I mean both paid and free submissions.

From my recent readings, I am getting an idea that google is getting strong against paid links. So I guess paid directory submissions also come in this category. (Google hates yahoo directory too?)

Please share thoughts.

But what about google's new anti-paid links policy? Is these directories are safe?

i disagree , as it helps, as high ranked web directories take money for getting in. also some like dmoz will not accept you easily, but the advantage with newly born web directories is that in order to promote themselves they approve your link easily and thus you have more links approved,

In due course of time some of these directories will improve their page ranks and thus you will automatically get benefited.

DMOZ is a complete joke. I'd like to know how many people have actually got accepted to DMOZ in the last 5 years.

I submitted a site back in 2007 which has still yet to be reviewed or accepted.

Directories still work, some of the better ones are paid.

But a backlink is a backlink, all have value. Obviously some more than others. Just don't go spending an arm and a leg for a directory package.

Lol, it's because your competitors edit the topic. Only sure fire back to make it, is to apply to become an editor.

Community based websites make it best though (so long the competitor editing the topic isn't a d-bag).

        Cheers

I would have to agree with omrishabbat, there are a few directory submissions that would work for now, but there is no point in paying for the creation of a backlink that will be nearly disregarded in the near future! It would be a waste of money.

Is Yahoo Directory separate from Yahoo Local Listings? I have a local listings but should I also submit to Yahoo's local directory?

And thanks for this refreshing post. I've been driving myself nuts finding local directories to apply to just to bump up my Places rankings

yes, yahoo local listing is completely different from yahoo directory. yahoo local listing is free but yahoo directory is paid. yahoo directory costs around two hundred dollars, check it, its a rough guess.
I do not recommend spending two hundred dollar for just one back link. Better try DMOZ if you are lucky to get approved you can get two high quality back links , one from DMOZ and other from dir.google.

Of course a backlink is still a backlink, I wouldn't spend too much effort on it though there are better places to get more powerful links. If, however, you have an auto submitter laying around then why not run it?

I would not be concerned about a penalty unless you are using AMR and blasting all at once.

If OP is considering an AMR blast (which I do not think he is), I suggest building 2.0 properties and blasting those as a safety net.

    a) a directory that is going to approve your submission
    b) submit to a category that is indexed in google

You know. I thought they weren't all that important, until it was the only thing I did on a brand new site about two months back. The site gradually moved to page two over several weeks as the submissions were approved one by one.

After that experience, I make sure to submit to about a 1000 PR1 or higher(if PR really matters) directories for each and every website I do SEO for. It doesn't hurt and appears to actually help.

It's more about link authority, especially after the Panda updates. If you can get a few backlinks from highly trusted and authoritative websites, then you'll beat the competition who submits to 100s of no-name directory listings that won't effectively bring you more traffic.

Getting into authoritative directories will help you... but there are only a few.

    - Make sure you look at the page rank of the page that your site will be listed on when you do register. If the directory lists your page on a PR4 sub-page, then that will help. If it's a PR0 page, then you'll get a lot less out of it.

(Therefore, choose a category that will get you high PR and be relevant to your site)

    - FYI, directory listings have little-to-nothing to do with the Panda update. You can be listed in DMOZ, Yahoo directory and still be hit by the panda update.
