Hi Gang,
Trying to figure out all this stuff for SEO has been pretty challenging for me, but this link from Google suddenly made at least the page rank part of things all very clear:
http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html
It's a little old, so you folks that have been doing SEO for a while probably know all about it, but for us new folks, it really explains a lot.
