Why Does Google Bother Showing PR Unless They Want to Be Gamed?

For the life of me I can't see any benefit of Google showing what a site's PageRank is. I understand that what we see from Google as the PageRank rating is probably very different then there actual overall trust ranking but all in all it still gives us somewhat of a gauge about how valuable a site is in Googles eyes. The only reason we would ever need this info is in order to build more powerful links and exploit their system. Any thoughts? Maybe I am missing something?
