Originally there was a great thread about this.

But since it is rather old and google has done some updates I want to inform you about exit popups. I read many articles, and they said there is no thread to your ranking if you place exit popups on your site. So I placed it on my site.

But after 2 days I got kicked back to the 60th page, while I was on the 1st page, 4th spot before for my favorite keywords!!

So now I removed my exit popup, hopefully I will be back in my spot in a few days. I dont use google ads or something, so I didn't violate their terms. What do you think, will I be back?

I don't know - but they're awful anyway, it makes a spammy website stand out and it wouldn't surprise me if Google think the same.

From what I have seen they don't but the first time your site gets manually reviewed they will toast the domain for sure. It hurts the user experience.

I would use it as a short term traffic method along the lines or cloaking and such. If it is your long term money site I would stay away.

Other option is to place the code on inner pages instead.

Yes, exit popups really affect your search engine ranking since i've heard that some people placed popups in their sites and got a sudden loss of positions on Google, so it's better not to place popups :S

Exit popups will not harm your site at all. I have a site w/an exit popup, and it ranks on the first page of google for about 10 different keywords.

The drop may not because of exit pop,But still you have to check the sites contents for duplicates and try to place keywords in urls and create more backlinks.Hopefully you will be back.

It's bad because it harms the user experience. The last thing you want to do is harm the experience of your visitors and you could probably do better with advertising directly on your pages. Have you considered that?
