I'm not having that problem. What niches are you looking in?

      marriage, divorce, IM, fitness, parenting

should i into something really specific and narrow?
and will it still be worth it how many exact searches do most people shoot for?

What you also should be paying attention to when looking for a domain name are words that your visitors can relate to.

Just having an exact match for a keyword is not necessarily enough in and of itself sometimes.

Let's say you were targeing the phrase Ear Warts and earwarts dot com has already been taken. Then perhaps earwartsolutions dot com would be your next logical name to consider.

Ask yourself "What is the outcome my visitors are looking for?" If it's a solution to a problem, than "solution" added to the end of the keyphrase may be a good way to go.

If the answer is they are looking for advice then "tips" or "tricks", as examples can be explored.

Just get creative. And remember you can always add a dash/hyphen if that will work for you. And don't forget the .net, .info, etc may work in some situations, as well.

Just add something to the end ... like "tips" or "guide" or even just "z". Having the exact match domain makes it a little easier to rank (for now) but it's not that much of a difference that you should spend all day on it

If you are finding good keywords that have weak competing sites then you should be building out sites for them reguardless of whether you can get the EMD.

    Just my 2 cents.

just watched an excellent video yesterday by fellow warrior Gene Pimental and then did a spot of domain research afterwards - couldn't believe how many domains there are available. If you search in the war room I believe Gene has a free report for one of his domaining methods that you might find useful.

Like cash cow said, just add something to the end. I usually use blog. For example, DivorceHelpBlog.com.

Also, are you looking at .net domains at all? I think a .com is important when you're dealing with people in the real world. So, if you had a pet shop, you would rather tell people to visit your site at PetShop.com.

On the other hand, if the site you're putting up is just one of many and most of your business is going to be the result of your SEO efforts, then you won't be giving out the domain to people on the street. They'll just find your site first and click on it (if the copy is compelling).

It's just as easy to get a .net site to rank as a .com. Actually, I think it's okay to go with any top level domain.

Lastly, if you use every technique in your SEO arsenal but fail just on having a keyword rich domain, you'll still be fine. It's a small factor in your ranking.

    Hope that helps!

There's a thought that google has a set of "stop words" that they don't consider when someone makes a search. Words like "is", "a", and so on. But the idea mostly from experience of others and have not been officially confirmed by google.

From my experience it seems to be somewhat true. For example if you wanted a keyword like "is___ascam" I often see ____scam rank just as well.

"a" is ignored but "is" is not ignored. I even use a help from domain extension, like having IM in extension (whatis.im) to rank for "what is IM"
When you search for "come to" you may quess which site ranks at #1
"why hire me" and "who is" another example. Look for other ccTLD's besides .com and you might find a gem.

Just put the letter v or x at the end of your keyword: eg: loseweightfastv.com.

This will still give you a keyword rich domain name & google will disregard the "v".

You don't have to have the exact working. You can add other words to the title or separate it with dashes etc. Put your thinking cap on. There are countless variations that you can put on exact matches and keywords.

  • dailyblogtips.com has a great article called 200 Prefixes and Suffixes for Domain Names.

That is my first reference when I can't think of a good prefix or suffix to add to an exact-match domain name.

If you are in it for the short term, go for EMD but avoid using EMD for long term strategy. It looks like Google is going to move away from EMD in future and will focus mostly on branded domains with authority.
