hey guys my questions is does it really matter? does wordpress rank better than blogs? which means getting a .com or .net or .org domain name other than .blogspot.com domain? Does these affect rankings or are they just minimal so much so that i can just overlook and continue with the free option?

I mean whats your opinion or is there an answer to this question?

The real thing you should be concerned about is maintaining control over your investment, which can be really hard to do on x.blogspot.com and x.wordpress.com. Both could shut you down at any moment and all your hard work would be lost.

Hosting services like these certainly have their place, of course.

Yes you're own domain name gives you're site more authority plus you have access to way more themes and plugins with a self hosted Wordpress blog.

...I like blogger and wordpress.com for building backlinks to my main domains

I think you are confusing wordpress.com and blogspot.com subdomains with your own registered .com domain. If you register your own .com then you can install the Wordpress.org blog software. This is the best option because it is yours.

Wordpress ranks better than Blogger, but I notice that the backend uses more browser resources, which is kind of annoying. Overall, I think Wordpress is better either way.

Like Paul said, register your own domain name, get a hosting account like HostGator, and install WordPress.

It is the self-hosted version, and is much more flexible than a free Wordpress.com site.

Then you have 1) your own blog/website, completely controlled by you, and 2) the ability to use proven plugins that will help you for SEO and ranking purposes.

    Respectfully,
    Merrill

I have used blogger for years and be warned, they can take your site down in no time.
That is what happens when you trust yourself to a site that controls your content and hosting.

Like others, I would suggest using Wordpress, get your own domain name, and then your own hosting.

I agree. Having Wordpress on your own domain is far better than either free Wordpress or free Blogspot. I had a great free Wordpress blog several years back, was getting good traffic, and then without warning, Wordpress deactivated my blog. There's no way to reinstate it either. The problem? They do not allow affiliate links. Blogspot might not have this same restriction, but being shut down is probably just as big a risk.

I've since built all my sites with Wordpress on my own domains and love the flexibility and security of it.

      A word of warning.

Once you get your blog up and a month or so of posts, do a backup of your entire blog. This will protect all of your work in the event that your server crashes or something happens to your blog. You do this backup within your CPanel.

Then, you can always reinstall your Wordpress, complete with all of your content. Believe me. This is worth doing. I lost my entire blog with 3 years of content recently. My only option now is to repost everything - a huge task. So make sure you backup both your blog AND the database. Do a backup regularly, every month or so is recommended, depending on how much content you add.

I know this is going a bit off topic to your original question, but certainly well worth knowing. Not sure if you can do such a backup on the free blogs.

there is no ifs or buts imho - wordpress is far superior than blogger for so many reasons I would need a looooong time to list them all here

I have never seen anyone recommend blogger over wp

wp is the way forward - spend a dollar of two for your own hosting and domain name and then rock on with your wp self!

I have 2 sites bringing in 5 figures a month and they are simple little WP blog membership sites. They are very powerfu.

If you cane get a .org and focus on keywords for your domain and through your post, you can get get on the top og google quickly. It usually takes me 2 posts and a youtube video and a day or so later, I am good to go
I get domains through GoDaddy and host through Host Gator. Wordpress blogs show good results quickly if you use keywords correctly plus the right plugins

I agree with you. Just one question, why .org? In your experience a .org does better than a .com?

Not to horn in with a slightly off-topic post (which is exactly what I'm doing), but which plugins do you recommend for SEO purposes. I've read several posts here and elsewhere on this, but I'd like to hear your recommendation.

I'm currently using All in One SEO Pack, Google XML Sitemaps and SEO Slugs.

      Thanks,

I think blogger is good if you are going the free no domain name no hosting route. But if you are going Hosting and domain nothing has more features, plugins, and themes than Wordpress. I use Wordpress for everything and started with blogger. Blogger is great but I prefer Wordpress along with countless others.

If you're serious then you should opt for a self hosted WP blog. One has full control over it. Never opt for free blogs and free hosts... REMEMBER !!

When you own the domain, you own the domain.

When you use blogger, you don't own the domain.

Mate, The true thing is that always top level domains gets more traffic. But if your contents of blog having domain name x.blogspot.com or x.wordpress.com are highly qualified then the domain names doesn't even matter.

You're right except if you own the domain you won't have to worry about Wordpress.com or blogger randomly deciding to change their TOS and remove your site without the slightest whiff of notification.

Rather irritating if you've put any amount of work into it.

Why anyone builds any kind of money site on something they don't own and have no control over makes no business sense at all to me.

If you buy a domain and make sure you get hosting with say Hostgator, so you have CPanel, PM me and I'll do a screen share and show you how to put Wordpress on your domain, it's very easy.

That way it's yours and you have full control over it.

Domains and services does not matter. What matters is your effort how much you customize and give quality content in your blog

      Nonsense Johny.

Wordpress.com don't even allow you to monetise their blogs and Blogger are notorious for randomly closing peoples blogs for no reason.

If you want any kind of long term business you need your own site that you own. Monetising Wordpress on your own domain is allowed and you then own the platform that you will be relying on to make money.

A self hosted blog is definitely better than free platforms, and not only because of the editorial requirements of free platforms.

The biggest risk you are taking using free services and depending on them is "Things Change"

Remember Yahoo Geo Cities? One day they decided no more free hosting. They were nice about it and gave advance notice so content could be transfered, but they didn't have to.

If you are going to put in the time and effort to author a blog there is no sense skimping on the 8 or 9 dollar a month hosting fee.

Besides, most people don't take free blogs seriously.

areoo - You're newbie into IM and not familiar with wordpress or blogging. If it's a R&D project in initial stage then I would suggest you to create a blog on blogspot.com and once you'll be more confident then switch to self-hosted domain.

    Reasons:
No investment required in case of blogspot.com. Either for domain name nor hosting etc. and it's really easy to use.

Choice is up to you. All the best!
