Backlinks are the links to your website from other websites, indicating their reference to your site.SO,a reference from a site better rated than your site (and relevant to your website) are weighed higher by the search engines. The more in number of such links will improve the rating of your website by Google. This is one of the factors, used by Google, important in website's ranking.

You can use methods like forum/blog posting, press releases and article marketing and social bookmarking.

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page from other websites. Inbound links are important because they increase your ranking on search engines and thus help in traffic generation. You can use blog commenting and article submissions among other methods

I think other posters have explained what backlinks are, so I'd like to help with the second part of your question - how to get them.

These are just some of the types of backlinks that you can build:

Articles - lots of sites (e.g. articlesbase, goarticles, ezinearticles and many, many more smaller article sites) will let you post content for free and include a backlink in the footer of your articles to your site. You can also contact blog owners and offer to do a guest post with a link to your site.

Social Bookmarks - sites like Digg, Delicious, etc. will let you post links to your site. You can also use software and automated services to do this faster - such as Bookmarking Demon and Social Monkee (see my signature for free version of this!).

Profiles - forums and web 2.0/membership sites often let registered users set up a profile (like the Warrior Forum does) and include links back to their site. This is free too, but these links are fairly low quality. Still, they can be useful.

Forum Signatures - you can register on forums that are relevant to your site and post helpful content, then include a link back to your site in the signature.

Blog Comments - many blogs will allow you to post comments after their articles - adding useful and relevant comments with links back to your site (as the poster's name field) is a good way to build links.

Press Releases - writing a press release and submitting it to some popular PR sites is a good way to get backlinks - if you are lucky your PR and link will be syndicated to lots of popular sites.

There are lots of tools and services that speed up the process of building backlinks, such as Scrapebox, SE Nuke, Article Marketing Robot, Article Demon and Social Monkee. Some are free but others can be expensive.

If you leave a comment under a blog with your site as the link (and preferably anchor text as your target keyword) then yes - that is a backlink.

The same as if you write an article and include a hyper-link toy your site or bookmark your site with a social bookmarking website. these are all backlinks.

You can start by editing your signature on this forum and including a link to your site!

Yes it is call backlink , by just leaving a comment and allow them to click the link you place to link them to your website. That is one backlink. But that is not enough, you need to make sure that the backlink you build is dofollow or nofollow. PR 8 may not enough yet, try to look on more blog or article that with TOP 5 PR.

A back link is an inward link to your site that may or may not be reciprocated with an outward link back. If page A links to page B then a back link would be a link which goes from page B back to page A.

For example let's consider you find an interesting article on web and you require the article to be displayed on your website hence you link the article to your website. Now your website acts as a back link to that article or to the URL where the article is originally located.

You need backlinks in order to rank in Google. No backlinks, no ranks. Ask help from a SEO expert. That is the best thing to do.
