how much does having a subdomain for a site really hurt you in the rankings? is it really shooting yourself in the foot from the start? I am just trying to start out with several small amazon sites and godaddys prices dont sound extemely high but once you start adding up the price of about 10 or more it gets very costly extremely quick. anyone have any experience with this? have you been able to get good rankings with subdomains?

I love to use subdomains and I have made a few tests to see how they rank. I'd rather not post the links here, because the pages are made to bash some IM scam products. I think it's not allowed to post such links here. If you want to see my test results I can PM you. My website which has keywords in subdomain + domain ranks #21 out of 16 million, while having no off site SEO except 1 backlink.

oh, well to send PM my post count must be 50+. Ok I am using subdomains at scam.ee
Check it out how those subdomains rank.
So with one domain I can create unlimited keyword rich urls. I have not put any effort into ranking them.
As you can see on opensiteexplorer.org they have only 1 backlink from my own website. It also doesn't matter that they are .ee ccTLD.

Now to make money I intend to do the same thing with reviews.ee to have a keyword rich domains for product reviews and I have no need to register new domain for every review I do. Although it is possible to get .info domains for $1 per year.

If you are interested in subdomains at reviews.ee or stores.ee I can give them away for $1 per year.

I've not experienced it doing anything negative damage, always like to stick with what I Know which is with domains, rather than a sub

Subdomains rank just the same. But you have to do the same things
you to do any domain, as that's what's it treated like. A regular
unique and different domain and website.

If there was some penalty, then go.com, zap2it.com, etc. would
not be filled with massive authority sites like espn.go.com and
        others.

BUT....you should not do subdomains unless they really are
separate and different websites. That's what they are for.
        They are not for subpages.

Since your subpages feed off of your main index page from your
domain, the SEO benefit of a subpage (internal linking assumed)
is automatic. A subdomain would need a whole SEO package to
go with it. It gets no benefit from the main domain.

If you do want separate sites, then go for some nonsense main
domain first to build off of.

But I gotta tell ya. Domains are a dime a dozen and so is hosting.
If you can't afford a couple more bucks a month, then how much is
your heart really into this online thing?

Or stick with one site, make some money, then expand.

I strongly recommend against sub domains for one simply reason. You will sooner or later want to be able to sell a site to pay for some other projects. That will be next to impossible with sub domains

I'm with Paul, subdomains are a false economy. If the budget isn't there then better stick with one site and work on that. Subdomains can have a spammy feel and you will almost certainly regret building up an empire on subdomains, somewhere down the line.

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

But if you happen to own books.com wouldn't it make sense to create keyword rich subbdomain + domain combinations like fiction.books.com or you would just use directories like books.com/fiction or books.com/fiction-books
Does the word order in domain (or sub + domain) matter? In other words to rank for "fiction books" which is better
    books.com/fiction
    or fiction.com/books
Given, that both have same on-page and off page seo?

      Good question, HN.
I am curious about this as well

I originally asked about subdomains because i am trying to build several small amazon sites and was curious if having digitalcameras.productreviews.com would be worse for SEO purposes than digitalcameras.com
(Neither of which are my sites. Just using that as an example)
