Buying additional years for established domains

First off, I don't know if it actually helps to buy domains for, say 3 years instead of one, but I see this mentioned sometimes. Say that it is. What about a domain you've owned for 3 years already. Does it do any good to extend it for 3 more years, instead of renewing year to year?

I dont think much of an advantage is present except for discounts. A three year renewal may save you a few bucks in the long run but lets face it a completly obscure domain such as ccvccvvcccvvcc.com will never e popular, and by doing a year to year you can cut if its proving to be useless.

Apparently it's a small part of Googles algorithm but I wouldn't think it's really much of a factor in the scheme of things.
