I'm doing keyword research for my newest website and I have a peculiar result on the first page for some of the keywords. I would be getting something like:

#1: PR0
#2: PR3
#3: PR3
#4: PR3
#5: PR0
#6: PR0
#7: PR n/a
#8: PR n/a
#9: PR0
#10: PR6


OR


#1: PR2
#2: PR3
#3: PR4
#4: PR4
#5: PR0
#6: PR0
#7: PR 3
#8: PR n/a
#9: PR0
#10: PR5

Some of the PR0 and PR n/a site have their homepages as either something high like PR4-PR7 or something really low like PR n/a - PR1. So is this keyword something that I should go after or do all those high PR pages make it unlikely to reach first page? Also what about if some of the top ones are Youtube videos...?

The thing I don't get is that a PR0 page with a PR0 homepage can beat a PR6 page. Makes me think that this word is doable since if one guy can do it, I should be able to do it too.

    A PR0 page ranking 1st clearly means

    1.You don't need a PR to rank.
    OR
    2.Nominal PR rating could be delayed, and the actual PR of the page is higher.
    OR
    3.The page is on a high PR domain.


    The most important factor in SERP ranking is keyword density, followed by site name.

    Yea, pageranks are on the way out, google used to do 4 or 6 updates a year, I believe there were only 2 made this last year.

    Have a look at the tools at seomoz.org, I would examine the search ranking factors of the competitors, including the number of backlinks and their page count.

      Can't answer this question without some other information. How good is the on-page seo of those sites? What kind and quantity of backlinks do they have? etc...

      Don't get hung up on PR when looking at competition. It is something to look at, but it dosen't mean you can't out rank it with the right SEO work.

    I wouldn't worry about the PR of your competition in this case. Like others have said, look at the on page SEO (keyword density, linking out to an authority site, good internal linking, etc) and the quantity+quality of their backlinks (what anchor text was used, are there any .edu or .gov links, is there a good variety in their backlinks, etc).
