I see that alot of SEOs are obsessed with getting a higher page rank and SERPs everyday trying to build the most amount of high quality backlinks they can through article marketing etc.

My opinion is that its great if you can climb up in rankings and you will pull traffic from your relevant keywords but I think getting traffic from direct referral sites is a much more solid and guaranteed approach to building traffic.

I look at my traffic interms of unique visitors, I dont care much about page impressions or hits. The article I wirte and place on EZA or other popular article directories may pick up one or a few visits from search engines like about 1-10 per day, however it is highly unlikely that the visitor will click on my backlink on the article page therefore EZA would have benefited from that unique visitor. I will benefit mostly from the do follow linkjuice which the article directory is providing.

On the other hand If I place a comment on a blog related to my niche, I am guaranteed at least 1-20 visitors per day from that one blog depending on its traffic. so basically what I am saying is..If you could get even 1 visitor per day from each backlink to your site imagine the possibilities?
even if you could get 70% of your backlinks giving you 1 unique visitor you would be getting alot of hits and not depend on google search results only.
you will receive google search results but that would just be like a top up

and when google decides to write some new algorithm which throws off your search rank, your solid backlinks giving you 1 unique visitor per day will still be going strong. so anyone with 10,000 backlinks or more would be in da money big time

Very good point, but you are also under the scrutiny of the blog/website owner...the website owner could delete your hyperlink or comment at any time. I can understand where you are coming from; however, there are very few blogs/websites with a decent enough amount of traffic to send you 1 unique visitor/day, and it is hard to find the ones that do have enough traffic to do so.
I think that the best approach would be a combination of both, this way you diversify.

blog comments are not the only way to get unique hits, you can get it from Web 2.0, social bookmarking sites, link directories etc .

while building these links your rank will go up as well and you will receive search traffic.
