Small goal for adsense

Hello everyone. As of now, I have $50 on adsense and I really want to crack that next $50 out of the way so I can get my FIRST paycheck. A couple of my colleagues have told me that the most I will get out of adsense is probably $20 for ONE site, and that's if it's generating over thousands of unique visits. I hope that's not true.
I was wondering, what would be the best way to slowly increase my adsense income from $1-$2 a day, and onward to $5-$10 a day, and so on?
Would it be best that I have adsense on a niche site focused on SEO, or a niche site focused on ppc, adwords, etc? I hope that makes sense...
