How important is .com ?

This question has been asked on this forum hundreds of times. It's not important.. at all. You can rank just as well with a .com, .org, .net .... and to many people's surprise, even a .info.

This question can be answered in a few ways though. The most common way to get to a web site or link to them is a .com so it is important to a certain extent. When comparing it to other domain extensions though it is not important, just as long as the other domain is a top tier domain.

So rank away unless you are worried about branding, that seems like the only time a .com is more important.

  If you are just looking at your domain name to get people to your site, then .com is everything as previously stated.
  
  If you will be building a good site with relevent content, etc you can get away with another type of extension.

You can rank just as high, but .com is much easier to remember and the first thing 99% of people will use or type in google or tell someone else.

I know people say it's just as easy to rank with a .info, but I have found that not to be true. .com/.net/.org always rank quickest for me using the same strategies. Others take more time. This is not a scientific study, but from my anecdotal experience it has mattered. I think you can probably rank with ANY of them, but I would argue it can be harder with some than with others.

I've run into so many people who say you have to purchase a .com. I've never had any problem getting .org or .infos to rank well. It just depends on how much time you spend perfecting your website. The only thing to keep in mind is that .coms are usually easier to remember and .orgs are often more trusted than a .net or .info.

If the com is taken, go with the org. Statisticly the .coms are higher than other tlds, next one in the line are orgs and then nets.

Statistically speaking, there are more of them. That has nothing to do with
ranking.

The myth just goes on and on, people cargoing on nonsense after nonsense.

Search engine and other types of traffic have nothing to do with a dot com.

But again, what will you people come up with when the first unique
dot whatever comes on board?

So much misinformation, it's crazy.

I have actually registered EMD's with different extensions including .com/us/info for the exact same keyword, gave them each unique content with similar on-site SEO. With absolutely no backlinking there was a very noticeable difference to the natural rank I received with the .com sites. I get the same results with .net/org as I do .com.

So you think duplicate content would of been better? What I did is very comparable since the articles were similar in word count, keyword density and quality. Had the results been close then it would have been questionable but they were not. Spend $10.00 yourself and try it with duplicate content but I am positive your results will be the same.

Honestly... in my experience it doesn't matter one bit.

I feel that the only place it really matters is how people see value or authority in the different extensions.

Most people tend to assume a domain is a .com unless told otherwise as they are used to it which can mean if you want type in traffic (people typing the whole domain out) you may find a slight drop, but as far as search engine traffic I haven't noticed any difference.

A .info can be perceived as lower value purely because you can pick them up so cheap and at one point they were used a lot by spammers, but the domain has just as much potential as any other.

There are reasons for all of the domains to be right for certain situations (.biz for a business, .org for an organisation, .me for a personal site) but as far as SEO I haven't noticed much difference, and no-one will hate you for using a .org if you aren't an organisation

Personally I use them in this order: .com, .net, .org, and then absolutely anything

lol

But that is only because old habits die hard and there was a time that I thought it had to be that way, now with actual experience I have .info and .biz sites that outrank .com so I know it doesn't really matter - it's all about what you do with it and how you promote it.
