Google keyword tool

I'm unclear on something about the Google keyword tool. I have it set for exact match so when I give it a search term it will return my search term with and without brackets. What do the brackets indicate?

I notice that all other suggestions it returns are also in brackets.

Brackets are the exact results and without are the broad. Ignore the broad as it will lead you down the path to pain and suffering (or ranking #1 in Google and not having any clicks).

I suspected that was it, but which is which right?

So [search term] is broad with 40,000 searches and search term is exact with 10,000 searches

And of course all the other suggestions are broad because they are variations on the original search term.

  Google recently changed their keywords tool to display broad and exact even if you only select exact, pretty annoying tbh.
  
  They also separated the keyword ideas and whatever keywords you typed in.
