I have a website .uk domain. What I want is that I only want to make it visible in Google UK (com.uk). I dont want it to appear in the other countries like USA (.com) or Australia (.com.au) etc.

I only want it to make it visible in search for UK people only? Is it possible? Do I need to make any changes in the robots.txt file.

Help me out!

    Hi davidbarter, for a start you can set up the UK as a geographical target in Google Webmaster Tools - this will help partially.

    Unfortunately, there's no sure-fire way to make your website unsearchable for specific countries, the most advanced thing you can try out is .htaccess - you can specify ip addresses that you want your website be available/unavailable for.

      I agree with this post. Additionally, even if your website appears on search results outside United Kingdom, people won't click it in case they don't need your products/services. The positive thing I can think of when your website appear on searches in other countries is, if a searcher is residing in Canada for example but is interested on UK services related to what you offer, he would be able to check your website. So geo-targeting is sometimes ignoring clients outside your area but their business is within your target.

        Your comment makes sense. By the way I didn't know about the webmasters thing. I'm gonna list my website just United Kingdom.

    Google Web Master tools is good for this - just sign up with your site and specify that it is UK only. However, the chances are that if you have a UK domain, Google will realise this anyway.

    Step 1 - Use a .UK domain

    Step 2 - Get backlinks from other .UK websites.

    This will allow you to rank higher in Google UK.

    Nothing else matters, who cares where you rank in US. Whether page 1 or page 1000 you dont even need to give it a thought, just concentrate on your UK rankings.

    Hi, It is not an easy method to block SERP results in other countries. Using Web master tools you will get option like 'target user of specific country'. So once you selected it as UK means Google will come to know you are focusing more on UK and so they will prioritize your content according to it.

    But it does not mean that your web site will not display in other countries SERP results. The only thing you can do is, you can block a certain set of IPs using .htaccess file or changing the IP's in host configuration files. If the web site hosted in Linux servers you van edit .htacess file and put comments like

    order allow,deny
    <Limit GET POST>
    allow from all

    # specific ip address
    deny from 123.123.123.123
    # deny a range: 123.123.0.0 - 123.123.255.255
    deny from 123.123.0.0/16
    # the whole class: 123.0.0.0 - 123.255.255.255
    deny from 123.0.0.0/8
    # shorthand for previous
    deny from 123
    </Limit>

    Check with this, if it doesn't work contact your hosting server assistance and check whether they can configure it in your server.

      Thanks for giving me this brief explanation. Now I've got the clear idea of how I can block ips.

      Thanks to every one for their support and coordination.

      What is your reasoning for wanting show up in the UK only?

      Servers and traffic usage should be a non-issue in 2011.

      You want your site to show up for anybody who has an interest
      in what you have to offer.

      Great Britain has business people, as well as tourists all over the world.
      You would also be cutting out people from Ireland and at the other
      end of the chunnel, who would have an immediate interest in the UK.

      Not to mention those who might be looking up info on the UK for future
      residence or business interests.

      Remember, it is still true. The sun never sets on the British Empire.
