Keyword results after Panda

Hi, I want to take a minute to look at a keyword and analyze the search results. For this, let's take the keyword "smoothie maker", a niche I currently have a site in that's pushed away by Google to #500-600.

At #1, we have Smoothie Maker, an EMD with a number of well written original reviews. In summary, a site you could say deserves that spot. I have a similar non-EMD of about 5 months with slightly more (but somewhat shorter) reviews.

At #2, we find Smoothie Maker Review — Helping you buy better!. This site is AWFUL. It has 1 very short product description and a bunch of copied user testimonials on the first page. the other pages consist out of autoposted syndicated articles that have nothing to do with the smoothie maker niche. On top of that the site redirects to Amazon every 15 seconds. How on earth does this site deserve to rank #2 after Panda??? I just don't get it. It also ranks #1 for "smoothie maker reviews" by the way.

#3 and #4 are Argos and Amazon sites

The rest doesn't really matter.

Can someone give me an explanation?

I'm quite certain that second site is breaking Amazon's affiliate policy by redirecting automatically to their site with their affiliate ID - probably Google's too. So it's surprising to see it in such a good position.

According to BackLinkWatch.com the site has 33 links - how many does your site have?

A lot of them appear to be from fairly unknown article sites, so it's unlikely that many (if any) will have a high PR. Only 5 have 'smoothie maker' in the anchor text but they are almost all dofollow. It should not be that hard to outrank a site like this - the reason your site is at 500-600 may be because you are in the Google sandbox or have a penalty.

The first site has 153 links, which, aside from the good quality content, may explain it's place at 1#.

I think the only answer is that Google isn't perfect yet...

My site has more than 1000 backlinks. Before going to #500-600, it was #2 for "smoothie maker reviews" and just in top #10 for "smoothie maker".

To say Google isn't perfect is an understatement.

Looks like the first site is linkbuilding 100% profile links. And he's a doing a ton of it. What shows up in backlink tools is usually just a percentage.

The second site may be reaping some short-term profits, but he'll be punished sooner or later. Even though he has less backlinks, his techniques are stronger. If he isnt punished for the redirecting, he'll take the no. 1 spot quite easily, very soon.

How are his techniques stronger exactly?

He's using some in content link with relevant anchor text. Even some of his backlinks have backlinks.

Just curious how much did you make with #2 for "smoothie maker reviews"? It seems to have really low search count per month.

Well, the thing with being #2 for smoothie maker reviews is that I also ranked well for other related smoothie terms, as well as for some product names. Hard to tell how much came from "smoothie maker reviews", but in the +/- 2 months it ranked well I made about 55 dollars through Amazon. it is however the keyword "smoothie maker" which I'm after and has a pretty high search count.

Hell i can even give you my site's URL, i don't care. It's Smoothie Maker Reviews
