Interesting discussion about backlinking

Last night was the first (not sure it was the very first) meeting of the Atlanta Mastermind Group. A discussion came up about doing lots of backlinking to your "money site." ONE SIDE MENTIONED everything we've read here... sending too many links to your money site can get your site sandboxed or de-ranked by Google. THE OTHER SIDE MENTIONED that if this was true, then your competitor would spend countless hours "bombing" your money site until it fell off the radar. That was a good point. How is Google to determine if you are trying to improve your own niche site or if it's actually a competitor trying to bump you off? Hope that made sense. Read this twice if it didn't. :-)

    It definitely makes sense.

I think that Google knows about this technique and I believe that any kind of links cannot hurt your rankings ... that's my opinion.

My question to your question would be does it help? Or, is it possible that link bombing is a waste of resources? My personal opinion is that it doesn't really help that much unless we are talking about low competition keywords.
