Are blog directories like OnTopList valuable for backlinks?

I'm assuming that you are talking about blog networks like BuildMyRank and such. I'm not all that familiar with the one that you mentioned but know about BMR and SEOLinkvine and such.

They quality actually greatly vary, SEOLinkvine tends to have crappy domains that won't pass much link juice or value to your website. That's because the owners don't really care about the blogs and will distribute all of the articles regardless of quality.

I'd recommend sticking with BMR, or a high pagerank homepage link service as most of those don't require manual content creation and are around the same fee (but provide MUCH better quality links).

Blog directories are a bit different than networks like SEOLinkVine. Most directories are really just lists of sites instead of places where articles are distributed.

For a diversity of inbound link sources, blog directories could definitely seerve that purpose, but you don't want to be paying for inclusion in the directory and if you can aviod it, you don't want to be adding a link to the directory to your site.

It's not going to add a rocket boost of ranking power to your site but is certainly something that can help your link profile be well rounded.

So I register my blog manually at each directory? I ask because i just bought Scrapebox and I'm struggling to understand what I do manually vs what software does.

I'm sorry I do not know anything about the software. I suspect there are probably some fields you can fill in and the software will navigate to the site and add in what it can to the registration form.

Software like this varies in amount of automation that it can provide and sometimes the sites themselves change things around simply because so many automation robots have been hitting them.
