How many keywords do you recommend building links for?

Hey I've got a brand new site which I plan on building up into a fairly large site that serves my niche.

I'm wondering, how many keywords do you recommend link building for at any given time?

    You do as many as you want. I have sites where I work with 100+ keywords at once and I find no harm in it.

      I agree, there really is no limit. However, just keep in mind that you should only focus on 1 to 3 keywords per any given page on your site, as this will ensure that your content stays intriguing.

      Also, you will find that this is a more effective approach to ranking well, as the pages are more targeted to a particular keyword and concept.

      When you begin linking back to your site, this will also allow you to do some deep linking, which is very important.

    It depends on your niche. You can hire an SEO agency for doing keyword research for you so that they can recommend the most beneficial keywords and save your time and effort from going after useless keywords.
    You can choose as many keywords but keep in mind that working on all of them can be mind blogging so start with less competitive keywords and move towards more competitive keywords gradually.

    I read through the response in this thread and most of them are talking about links in one page. I apologize as I am not able to understand your query clearly. If you are talking about keywords within a link text or anchor links, at most 3 words is good. For links within a page, I usually do it 3 at most too. This is within the content because I don't want my readers to leave my page without reading the whole content. Other links for additional information or related links can be more than 5 as long as all are related to the content.
