Ping - Is this more of a 'feel good' strategy?

What's your take on pinging? I was researching Pingler.com and they offer a wordpress plugin that will automatically ping old posts randomly for you (there is a charge for this), I am wondering what's the point?

I understand Ping is suppose to help get new pages found by search engines, but for older pages that are already indexed, is this just a feel good strategy to help webmaster sleep better at night thinking this automatic Pinging is actually doing something?

What's your take on this?

As far as I knew pinging was to alert search engines of new or updated content. So when they come around after pinging an old post and find that it is exactly the same I have a feeling they won't give that content any extra love. Just my 2 cents (not tested).

Search Engine can't credit your site if they can't find your backlinks. Some people think that letting search engine discover their links - "Naturally" is good enough, I don't think so.

I always ping or crawl or index our links so that search engine find them and give credit to raise my site's ranking, let alone search engine to discover them is not efficient and you'll left out a lot of backlinks...
