Why Get Backlinks From Related Websites?

Hi Warriors,

I often see folks asking if they need to get backlinks from related websites, and if so why?

The first rule of SEO is that search engines do not rank websites, they rank each page individually. So, doesn't that mean that the website topic doesn't matter to search engines? That is true, search engines do not pay any attention to website topics, they are much more granular in their approach. It is the page topic, and more importantly, the text in and near the anchor text of the link that determines backlink relevancy.

While search engines are highly granular, the typical human user isn't. Generally, the primary goal of SEO is to generate targeted traffic to your website. Backlinks are useful and often required for good search engine rankings, however they serve a dual purpose. The direct link traffic you receive from links placed on related websites can often dwarf the traffic potential from search engines alone.

My advice is to focus on related websites when you are building backlinks. A proper promotional campaign will typically generate twice the direct link traffic as you receive from search engines alone. That is triple the result for for very little extra effort.

Here are a few tips on how to find websites related to the keyword you are targeting:

Pay particular attention to bloggers in your industry niche. Clip excerpts of their best blog posts and post to your own blog with the reasons you liked their article. Be sure to include a link back to the original post. Email the blogger and let them know about your complementary post. You may find this an excellent way to start building a relationship with the thought leaders in your chosen niche.
