You can monetize your site in any number of ways. I personally never made a lot with adsense, but there are people who do quite well. I went the micro-niche adsense route back when I first started. While I made some money, there were just so many variables and I felt I had little to no control over it. I think a lot of that was due to me still being green.

Depending on the traffic you get, Adsense may be a great way to monetize. You can test it out and check your data. Depending on the niche/type of site you have, there are other options as well. You could try selling banner space or concentrate on building a list and marketing to your visitors that way.

The best advice I can give is look at it as a business. Some things will get you a few bucks up front but won't give you lasting value, others will give you more long term potential and then finding that happy medium means getting a bit of both.

I've certainly had projects designed just to build up some capital to fund longer term, larger projects. It's an effective way to raise capital. Hope this helps a bit. I know it's not groundbreaking, but this business is really 90% common sense and 40% hard work

I would suggest you to mix different advertisements with Google Adsense. You can add direct advertising, viral videos, text links etc to increase your revenue. Adsense is the best way to monetize small blogs and sites as it displays the most relevant advertisement. And it increases the click-through-rate.
