What about .us versus .co

My #1 keyword phrase .com is taken. I note that the .us and .co are available. Which one would you choose?

The .co extension, I have never bought one of these. It looks like a typo. Seems that returning visitors might remember .com instead of your .co if they just type it in their browser. OTOH, a .us extension, seems that you could highlight at the top of the page that it is a .us -- hey, our site pertains to (keyword phrase) in the USA only, cuz that's where we do business. You could write some brief copy that kind of brands your .us name.

What's your opinion? The .net and .org are taken, too. A .biz is available. But .us seems more authoritative, less commercial. My site would provide a lot of info about (keyword phrase) and then pitch them for a sale.

Lastly, I note that the .net phrase with hyphens is available. But a big competitor of mine has my-keyword-phrase.com and I don't want to steer him any business!

Personally I'd choose the .co. I've never had one personally, but I've gotten a few of my clients to the top of their markets using theirs.

I think the .us is off-putting, so I never use it.

I'd either choose the dead-on .co, or the .net with the dashes. Or honestly, both if you can.

      Why do you think that?

BTW, my clients are not sophisticated web surfers. They are generally older and with less computer experience than savvy surfers. They are also largely patriotic. I wonder if that helps the case for the .us, haha.

Ha, if your keyword was "American Flags" or something like that, the .us might be better. But for SEO purposes, I'd recommend the .co or .net.

If you're going for offline marketing, or are trying to create a brand, then you probably don't want the dashes.

And there's just something about the .us that I don't like. I think I had a potential client who had a .us, and I did a bunch of research for him, but I don't think he ever committed to my SEO service. It might just be circumstantial.

And I don't believe the .us works the same way as .co.uk and being relative the country, boosting the SEO and rankings in that country.
