Is link diversity important for SEO?

Nofollow backlinks are not as effective as dofollow backlinks for page rank purposes, but nofollow backlinks are just as effective as dofollow backlinks for getting link juice.

1st question: So wouldn't you want a combination of both then?

Hypothetically, if you created each of these backlinks to for three exact same websites at the same time:

A) 100 PR 5 dofollow links
B) 50 PR 5 dofollow links/50 PR 5 no follow links (link diversity)
C) 100 PR 5 nofollow links

2nd question: Which would rank the fastest if each went at the same link velocity? In other words, which method is more effective?

I actually want to disagree with you. Both can help improve your rankings, but I don't believe that no-follow links transfer as much "link juice" as regular follow links would. Page Rank I think you're right though.

Personally I'd choose A. But honestly you want link variety, so I'd include A with a bunch of other link creation methods.

From my understanding, it's the diversity from having a mix of nofollow and dofollow links. I think all links should be dofollow if this is possible. Where the diversity comes in is the types of backlinks you are generating IE some from blog commenting, forums thread posting, article submission, so on and so fourth.

If a site has an unnaturally heavy amount of dofollow links compared to nofollow links it will get penalized according to a study SEOmoz did.

Not only is link diversity very important for getting good SERPs, but its also a nice cushion when and if Google devalues a portion of the kinds of links you build. If you build all forum profiles and Google devalues them (which I believe they did) there go ALL of your rankings.

Yeah, you want to be careful sending too many similar links to a site.

Andrew is right. If you're mixing things up as much as possible it's much easier to keep your rankings if Google devalues a certain type of link.

For SEO you pretty much need to just get as many links as you can but links from a Pagerank 6 site are better than a Pagerank 1

The trick is definitely to make your link building look as random/natural as possible. So you would need both dofollow and nofollow links from lots of different sources, leaving less of a footprint for google to find

I have no idea where you people get this stuff!

Do you just make it up on the spot?

Nofollow and dofollow? (There is no dofollow BTW)

ANd you think if they are not balanced, you get penalized?
For what? For doing the RIGHT things?

nofollow is for spam, untrusted links. Are you saying your
      link is untrusted and spam?

      Makes no sense.

Yeah. If google penalizes for having too many links that are
not nofollow( NOTE: there is no dofollow), then....

You really need to put a big sign on top of your webpages:

PLEASE don't link to me unless you pair up your links with
      a nofollow one.

Where on earth do you people get this stuff from?

Sometimes I think you people are smoking something special...

Here's tip: Build as many nofollow links as you can. Especially
if you are one of my competitors.

Leave all the rest for me.

No wonder people think the WF is filled with nonsense.

Link diversity? For what? From what?

Those that know, concentrate on a quality, non nofollow links.

This whole diversity thing would cause people to not internal link
and not toss a sig link here.

Haven't you people heard the term "viral" ? You cannot control
      who links to you.

      Seriously people. Get a grip.

I can't remember the last time I actually posted or looked for a nofollow link.
