On First page - but want to now get in top three

I have a couple of dozen KWs that I'm on the first page. However, I've been around long enough and know that there is a BIG difference between #1 spot and #2.

Most of my niches I'm ranking from #4 to #9 on. My question is, without backlinking - how can I get to the number #1 position. I know I won't be able to do it on all my niches - but a few of them would be nice.

Any suggestions of climbing from say #7 to #1 on the first page?

Gonna have to build links one way or another. There's no getting around it, it's important.

    • Well if you have made it to page 1, then you know the fundamentals of SEO. The only reason there are guys above you, it because their sites are better SEO'd at the moment. So continue to get high PR quality backlinks to your page with the keyword in the anchor text. It may take a while, but essentially that's all you need to climb higher in the SERPs

there are really 2 different factors for how well your site gets ranked, onpage and off page seo... you do not want to build backlinks(offpage seo) so you are going to have to optimize your website (onpage seo) to the point where Google thinks that it is better suited to help the needs of the people searching for that keyword than the number 1 spot.

I think you pretty much have to look at the sites that outrank you and find out why
ie- check their backlinks and check their content etc

I agree with mmsearch and would like to recommend you Seomoz PRO membership for that purpose. They have 30 days trial. You can use their tools to analyze your own website and your competitors. As for me, I liked it, I've found lots of little things to improve.

Google seems to be placing a lot more emphasis on 'UX' (user experience) lately, including with the whole Panda thing. We still can't know how much of a factor this is vs. good ole backlinking, but I do wonder if people who swear by BLing and rely on it solely are going to get a rude awakening soon.

It's worth trying some UX stuff - keep ppl on your site longer with better internal linking, more images, try to get something viral on there for more social signals. You may get less CTR but it will be worth it overall. The game might be changing, better keep ahead... Hopefully it will benefit your rankings too. As for backlinking, it seems to me lately that diversity and quality of BLs is winning out over sheer volume.

Who says you can't earn money as an eBay affiliate any more? My stats say otherwise

you could try using something like seopressor to verify your on-page seo is looking good.
But to be sure, your going to need to do some link building.

You will have to create backlinks to climb to the No.1 spot but if you think you already have many and doesn't want more then their is only way i.e. to do on-page SEO. I don't think there is any other way.
