Effective, high traffic link building.

Hey guys, I'm looking for FREE ways to add valuable links to my site. I'm not really looking for "backlinks" in the sense of gaining PR (though if it happens that's great too), but more so links that targeted visitors could just click to go to my site.

I guess a simple way to put it is, I want links that people click, not links for Google. Crazy, I know, but from what I'm seeing in terms of using articles and forum links (which I've read a bit about on this site and how the PAGE needs to have good PR) it has become increasingly difficult for me to find free methods to obtain these. A couple of years ago I ordered Angela's backlinks back when they were only $5/mo for 30 links. I added my link to all of the sites. Checked my PR a week later and it had came up from 0 to 2. Just from the 30 links. I've noticed a lot of people here seem to discourage using profile links and what not, so I'm just curious to see what are your most effective FREE link building methods.

Of course, if you don't use FREE methods, I'd still like to know what you recommend because in the future I plan on implementing paid methods as well. As I've been told my entire life, "You get what you pay for," but I'm hoping there are still some good free methods out there to help get me started. Afterall, I have to make some money before I can invest any in anything other than hosting and domains. Thanks!

I'd say forum posting (quality, relevant posts on forums relevant to your site), blog commenting on relevant sites, and guest posting (huge) on relevant sites would be your best bets.

Like John said, forum post will bring in a good amount of free traffic.

The key to forum backlinks is building trust, give something free that has value to the niche forum. Host the free product on your site, upsell from the site, email, etc...

Don't spam any forums with links, everyone hates spam!

Guest posting, contact e-zine publishers in your niche, forum posting, etc.

The key to this really is quality content though. Write good stuff, and people will share it. There is a ton of info in the main forum regarding article syndication. Look for posts by Alexa Smith, MYOB, TPW, and they'll point you in the right direction.

I've found that forum posting, yahoo answers, and guest blog posts are great sources for free targeted traffic. There's a strategy to maximize the effectiveness of each, just search around the forum as there's been plenty of discussion on each.
