Is there a way to tell how many citations my places page has other than looking at the bottom of the page?

The citations that you see at the bottom of your Place page are just a small part of the citations associated to your listing. There is no sure way to say exactly how many citations have been associated to your Place page, and frankly, there is no need for that. You can see which citations have been already indexed by Google when you perform a regular search for the company name and address or the company name and phone number.

In order to make sure that the citations get associated to your Place page you need to equalize the business data that all around the Web. This is all you need to care about as far as I am concerned, regarding citations. Consistency of data.
