People write entire books on this and build huge websites on this and build companies that specialize in this.

Getting every single detail is near impossible as that would take months.

Best place to start- read what has been written.

To say it in the easiest of ways, SEO means:

1. Optimize your page.
2. Increase the number of links to your site, gradually (I can't remark this enough).
3. Keep adding fresh good content to your site.

All SEO boils that to that, so it can shed some light for you to start learning.

Where would I start if I were you? By learning HTML and CSS, and learning how you can use that to make an optimized web page.

Research first about SEO. Then if you have better understanding about it, start doing SEO thing like article submissions. There are a lot available on the net on how to start it.

Yes, you can try SEO Book and Google's Starter guide. However, I think that SEO Book is a bit too complicated for a complete newbie, while Google's Starter Guide has a strong bias (Google is Google, you know).
So, for a complete rookie, I'd recommend SEO in Practice. It has lots of examples, everything is nicely explained, and it's fun!

Quick and simple advice, SEO mainly divided in to 2 process, First is on-page and second is off-page. On-page is done on website pages, specially on those page which will be landing pages.

Second is off-page, which is not done on website pages but done on other different website to populate the links....

SEO is a very wide topic and it can't be described in just a few lines. You need to learn by acting on it . SEO is a tools to use in Internet Marketing promoting your site effectively with better ranking. It could be a simple and yet complicated thing but you got to learn it. It also depend on what kind of marketing program you join and products sell online. Some marketing may not required in depth knowledge of SEO.
