My "About Page" got ranked higher than my domain..

Today my "About" page got bumped up to the 4th page of google for a broad search of my target keyword.... all while my homepage is barely hanging on inside the top 500 for the same keyword...

It's weird (I think?) because the homepage is super optimized for on-page SEO, with the help of Yoast's SEO for Wordpress plugin, while the About page is more or less a ripoff of Copyblogger's about page... opt-in forms and all....

Is this normal? Is it a difference of content?

It's my first niche site, my first attempt at anything "marketing".... so I'm not a pro at this by any means... just kinda picking things up as I float along. Any help is appreciated!

I'm guessing your site is less than 8 weeks old? If this the case then it is a normal occurence. Google takes a bit of time to rank a site accordingly. All you need to do is continue building links with the relevent anchor text to the pages you want to rank. From my experience it can take up to 8 weeks for Google to correctly rank each page.

Yeah the site's about three weeks old... So I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed and keep pounding away at those backlinks. Cheers for the tip.

Probably best to pump backlinks to your domain, not your about page

If it's a new website, it's not strange, but you'd better make the page like "About", "Contact Us" nofollow, you won't update it often and you don't want it share your website's PR juice.

Oh? I didn't realize you should make those kind of pages nofollow. Is there a post or article somewhere you could point me to that explains this a bit more?

I think he means the internal links that point to these pages should be nofollow. - This is sometimes a good idea.

You just need to add rel="nofollow" in the link html.

        ex:

        <a rel="nofollow" href="aboutpage">About</a>

You can also make the page noindex and derank the importance of the about, contact, etc pages in your xml sitemap.

        Hi mpacheco,

        Don't do it!

That was bad information. All that happens when you add the nofollow attribute to those links is that you prevent link juice from flowing. That link juice is lost to the ether. If you leave those links alone you get more link juice flowing through your website.

For best results, let the juice flow.

haha, there's no shortage of conflicting information when it comes to SEO, is there...

Thanks for clearing that up, Don.

I agree- let PR flow naturally. Could it be that your About page is more relevant to your key phrase?

  • I won't recommend adding nofollow tag to your main pages (About or contact). However, the ranking depends on the quality of content. You need to revise your home page content and make it more optimized than about page. Also make use of Metas for ranking the home page and remove similar meta tags from home page.
