Lets say I have a site on dog food and I want the main site to rank for

dog food
dog treats

And I have a page written around dog treats, and its perfectly optimized.

But I'd PREFER people to land on my home page, which is more focused on dog food.

So I build dog treats links to the home page.

But now I see that G is confusde.. it keeps on switching back and forth on what to rank.

Should I build links to that sub page or will it look unnatural ? Does G favor the home page?

'it keeps on switching back and forth on what to rank' how can you find that?

According to my experience, suggestions are:
    1. Make some attractive ads. on your food treat page and lead people to your home page.
    2. And your keywords are too competitive as everybody will use them as their keywords,,maybe you can change it for more specific one like 'Dog food online, Dog food in XXXX', etc.
    3. G prefer home page than inner page, the inner page rank and level is related with your home page, however, it is not absolutely right, you can also have a perfect rank for sub pages when G thinks it is useful for guests.

So get a good use of your subpages, focus on how to attract people who interested in how to treat their dogs to buy some food for their lovely dogs from you.

I second that, the domain doesn't matter either way, what matters is the "page" that you are trying to rank for. If you added your dog food article to a weight loss site, you could still rank that inner page for dog food, because that is what the page is about.

People often forget, but focus on a page by page basis rather than a site basis and you will make a lot more money, build out stronger more authority sites and benefit much more in the long run.

If I were you, I would dog food on the home page and create a inner page that is about dog treats. Then create articles around longtail version of dog treats, like best dog treats, healthy dog treats etc. and add a link from each one of those pages to your dog treats page.
