Can I get Page One on Google?

I just picked up an exact match domain name for a term that gets 1600 exact match searches a month. The first page has stiff competition. The first two sports are held by articles on MSNBC and ABC News and the number 10 spot is a Yahoo article. Pretty much all 10 spots are "big dogs." When I look at their backlinks, they just have links from within their own sites. Is it possible to beat them or waste of time?

Yeah, it is still possible to beat them. You have to come up with a good link building campaign and on page SEO must be done properly. You could also do some case studies on how they have ranked their sites that high and I'm sure that you will be able to beat them.

  • Quite difficult to beat the big guns. However, you can check their on page optimization and backlinks for that particular page. Try to cover those and you will beat them and use the optimistic approach. Also check is it worth investing and doing all the hard work? You don't want peanuts after hard work!

Yes it is. If you can do the right thing to get on top for your chosen keyword/phrase, then you can definitely can rank your site to the first page of Google for you keywords/phrases.

It's hard to say if you can outrank them based on the information that you have provided or if it's even worth it for a little as 1600 visitors a month.

The what you called "big dogs" also came from the deepest list of Google. So yes, it is possible to rank and beat them. Since you are working to get on top of Google, you should not forget the guidelines that they are giving.

In doing this, you will avoid any conflicts and you will be able to work on the right track.

You can rank a keyword at first position of Google but you need to have backlinks with high PR and Domain authority to rank quick on first postilion.

G ranks pages, not sites. Look at the specific pages' metrics like PR, anchor text of backlinks, HTML title tag, etc. and see if you think you can do better.

It depends on what the competitors page is actually ranking for.

If your keyword is "yellow dog farts" and the competitor page is ranking for "yellow dog" and isn't optimized for the phrase "yellow dog farts" it will be easier to out rank them for that specific term.

Just go to the competitors page and do a ctl-f type in your keyword, and see how many times it shows up on their page. You can also do this while looking at the page source to see if it's in H1 tags etc...

I am bringing this up because you mentioned getting the exact domain match, which tells me it's likely an obscure long tail keyword, and the competition may be ranking for only part of that keyword.

Probably not worth the trouble for 1600 searches per month ... depends on your keyword. Is it a product name?
