crescendo, google webmaster tools provide you your data. Yes, it's the best - but it's just about your websites. If you need competitors' details then you need majestic backlink tool, semrush.com for keyword etc.

For keyword's I just use Google's tool. For the other stuff, link building etc. the best on the market (in my opinion) is Xrumer if you can afford it any know how to use it properly but also VenomSEO, SENuke, Scrapebox and AMR are all great tools.

noble, there is a huge difference between google keyword tool and semrush, spyfu etc. Google provides relevant keywords while semrush-ish services provide profitable keywords - carefully selected by competitors

I don't use tools to pick my niches and keywords, I use my brain. I just plug some stuff into G's tool to double check when I'm not sure but I've been doing this for a living for quite a while and do just fine by sitting back and thinking about what I would search for.

Yes, that's easy to do if you have a couple of hundreds keywords. But if we have 25,000 keywords case - thinking will take too long. I give you an example:

e.g. "for sale by owner" topic. Search terms like "<city> <ST> for sale by owner" converts well if the city in a depressed area - and not so well if the city is booming. Florida, with all its retirees, those have a lot of free time - is good for FSBO. California, Silicon Valley - people are busy and prefer to hire agents in spite of they know the drill. So - you have hell of a brain if you can go through entire US cities list and estimate their FSBO markets
Since my brain is not so powerful - I'd prefer to steal the data from an experienced competitor.
