I learnt seo through purely researching about seo,
start on things like "begginers seo" and learn the main factors and how google works, then look in more detail untill you feel youve learnt what you need to to start seo, try and keep up with latest news from google and other search engines, it can be very helpful

There are no recognised "qualifications" in SEO. There are a few courses online that you can do but I can't comment on the quality of them. The problem is that Google will never tell an SEO what they are looking for and they will say that manipulating the search results is bad so therefore will never accredit any SEO course.

    Know what I mean??

Read this forum, look up posts made by the senior members and read what they have to say on matters specifically. Also, stay current with SEO news and read blogs like seomoz and seobook. Test and practice SEO as you read and learn because first-hand experience is usually the best means of learning. Finally, you can check out the link in my sig that leads to thread I made here on the history of Google and its updates - it's good for getting started at page 1, so to speak, and understanding how we got where we are now.

Learning website design is not necessary at all. But you must learn the basics of SEO. On page and Off page SEO. On page SEO tells google that the page has standard components. And off page SEO proves its popularity. Download google's free SEO guide and learn about on page SEO. And researching online will give you enough idea about off line SEO. There are numbers of ways to do that.

A friend of mine that works at a third party Google company told me to learn basic web design if I want to go into SEO. I recommend checking out w3schools.com to learn html/css coding and then do whateveryone else said read articles, blogs, this forum, and most importantly use Google.

You really should learn some web design first -- at least how to create a Wordpress blog, upload a theme, manage plugins, and how to find a good theme without getting a free one that comes with lots of hidden links. (This kind of thing can get your site sandboxed before you start, if the links are to the wrong places).

Even after you do this, you will still need to alter the design of your sites from time to time in order to adjust things like keyword density, internal linking strategy, etc.

In effect, on-page SEO is good site design.

You really should learn at least some of the SEO basics before designing your site. Sure you will need to know how to set up your site, supplying it with valuable content, video's etc but it's pointless writing articles or content if they end up being technical jargon that only you understand.

You're content will firstly need to contain 'Keywords' that you're targeting and not just a subject matter that would be impossible for search engines to find you let alone rank you for; so that your potential customers find your site.

There is lots of value on this site but also some bad or old techniques that are now otherwise redundant, so do your research first before spending hours on dud information.

SEO itself is a minefield, there are so many ways to drive traffic but I would suggest first to conquer:-

        1. 'Keyword Research' and how that works which is easier than you may think.
2.Back linking, it's easy at first to fill your site up with thousands of back links which could lead to google putting you in a "sandbox" So learn to do it, the right way.

There is a ton more to learn re SEO; master these 2 first and you will be well on your way.

        Good luck

SEO is not a tough thing to learn. Its just two things - on page factors and off page factors. Knowledge of web design is not necessary although its good to have knowledge of html tags.

The most easiest part to study any subject now a days is in the internet. You can learn and study seo from an institution if you want but, you can have some good ideas of SEO if you visit through internet and read various articles over it.
