Hi...

I am completely new to the internet marketing game. This is the first time I've ever dabbed into anything and I decided to make a niche site. The site was opened almost 2 weeks ago.

I have no knowledge on SEO except for the basics that I learned from other experts' articles on the subject. So if I say something that is completely wrong or obvious, please be kind
When I heard that backlinks were key to making it to first page of Google, I was really disappointed. Again, I was starting this webpage with Level 0 internet marketing knowledge.
I was under the impression that search engine rankings improved as the site improved with quality content. I hated the idea of having to make separate backlinks for the sole purpose of improving my search engine ranking.
Anways...with this advice, I made 2 backlinks. One article and one blog. It has been about a week now, though, and it still is not showing in my backlink count so I am not sure if Google has counted them in yet.

I decided that I am not going to do the whole backlinking game and see what happens. Since this is my first webpage ever and only just a dip into the pool of the niche website game. At this point, Google indexed my page and was sitting at about 50-60 in Google ranking position.
I continued to work on my site for many hours a day- really I worked day and night on it. It has better, and more content on the subject than all of the top 10 on Google for that niche. After Google indexed my site again, about 3 days ago (meaning it hasnt even been 2 weeks yet)...it is now sitting at #15 in ranking position.

My question is...can I keep just pumping out quality content on my site and hope it keeps improving in rank? So far, i have 0 in all of my backlink counts.

backlink reporting programs & sites will never give you an accurate number of backlinks. To check if a backlink is found by Google, simply enter the full url for the backlink into the search box.

If it returns as the top result, then it means Google has found your backlink and it is indexed. (there's some argument, that google still counts links that have been crawled, and not indexed...but that's not important now.)

So continue building BOTH quality backlinks and quality content.

Actually Its really possible to come top 20 without any backlinks if the keyword is low competition and you got exact match domain.
    Thanks

On page 3 with a new site that has no back-linking done with it yet. Basic onsite SEO with a keyword density of 3% on that keyword in the two articles I've put up so far (both original content). The keyword its ranking on is a low competition secondary keyword that is an exact domain match.

Getting it to page 1 should be pretty easy and happen fairly soon as I add more content and get the social bookmarks setup. Alexa seems to love it as well, as it went overnight from the top 25% in their rankings to the top 17% - and this over a period where I hadn't done anything onsite (or offsite) as I was working more on my other site which doesn't get the same kind of Alexa love.

If keywords are low competitive and you do On Page SEO very good then you can come in top 20 in search engine.
