Blogger v's a real website

I'm quite new to the IM game and currently use blogger.com rather than creating websites for starting up quality content, adsense sites.

I heard blogger is good because it does a lot of the work for you e.g hosting, pinging etc and you can use a domain name. Just wondered what the general consensus is.

Also this thing about meta tags (aaargh all that jargon) how do you add/create meta tags in blogger or does it automatically add them for you (as if by magic).

I know my site is embarrassingly bad but if anyone has the inclination to visit it, I would appreciate any productive criticism.

Thankyou

    If you are going to put quality content, learn to have your own website where you can do whatever you want... Blogger has limitations...

    But of source if you want free, then go on with blogger..

      What do you mean? There should be no problem putting links anywhere in blogger..

    No, I meant in this post, so people can critique my blog if they want. Because I'm new, I have to submit 15 posts here before I can add my link.

    Better to have your own site and give it a blog or articles directory, blogger is free indeed but you can't put different keyword meta tags on each post - you can only give meta on the whole blog.

    Here is my take on this:

    1. You need YOUR site
    2. Keep your site simple (look at Google to understand what I'm talking about: simple)

    Hi Yves -
    It actually depends on what kind of business you're creating. If your intention is to create a large online presence and promote products then you should register your own domain name and get your own hosting.

    Both of which are very low cost. Blogger is good to use as an addition to your overall business but not as the business model itself.

    When you asked about the meta tags I assume you're referring to the meta keywords tag which is ignored by Google anyhow so there's almost no reason at all to use them. (I say almost because Yahoo and MSN do still take them into account - although its not a huge boost for your rankings by any means).

      True, WordPress does have better software than Blogger (IMO) however, they frown upon anything that remotely smells of promotion. It's crazy sometimes.

    Your own site is better. You change change it around better (optimization, mainly).

    Don't let people discourage you from using Blogger. It is an outstanding software platform and Google are favourable to those that use it.

    You can edit the HTML yourself for SEO... Use this code...

    <b:include data='blog' name='all-head-content'/>
    <meta content='your blog description' name='description'/>
    <meta content='your keywords split by comma' name='keywords'/>
    <meta content='your name here' name='author'/>

    <title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

      The posts before don't mean to discredit blogger platform, indeed it is a great platform, I use it for my blogs, easy to use, etc.
      Yet the control over it is limited, can't use different keywords on different posts, can't add affiliate store, etc.

      If you don't need full blown site, blogspot is the way to go

    It depends upon the purpose of your product. It it is just your hobby go for a blog but for serious money making your should go for a website or paid wordpress blog.

    I think it also depends upon what type of contents. Blogger and wordpress are easy as compare to owning a website. To add contents in website you need to know some bit of html and other technical stuff whereas those things are done for you in blogger and wordpress.
