I Don't Get It...Why Am I Not Ranking?

Hey Guys,
I am a relatively experienced warrior, and have been doing IM for a couple of years now. I have a site in a particular industry that ranks very well for certain keywords, and is non existent for others.

A Little Background

While I do not want to divulge the industry I am involved in, the jist of it is that I review various types of products.

Many of these products have very few people writing about them, and in some cases, I am practically the only one who has written about said topic. Yet, I am still on page 32 or whatever.

I actually have Youtube videos of OTHER products that I write about that rank for the keyword which is completely different from what the searcher.

For example, I wrote a product review about XYZ Product, and when you search google for XYZ product review, on page 2 a Youtube video I created for Product ABC shows up! It makes absolutely no sense why I am not ranking for some of these topics.

The only thing I can think of is that as a result of the Panda update, Google may have found a few of my pages that were lacking in content, thus affecting my site as a whole.

Don't get me wrong, the site gets a decent amount of traffic, but it should be doing alot better!

I have done numerous backlink packages to this site, but most of them are just "band-aid" solutions which give me temporary results.

Sorry for the rant guys, I am just looking for a little bit of guidance from anyone. Thanks.

Rob

My sites may lack in content - but I have not been hit hard.

I'm assuming you've already got all the basic stuff done, like good onpage, etc.

Get some high PR links and see if that helps.

Do you have any other issues with the site? Is there good navigation, etc.

Similar thing happens to various pages of mine. I just learned to ignore Google. It needs time. Do the right things the right way as you know it and then give Google time. Your site will bounce around and land where it belongs.
That's what I learned so far.

If you are not showing up on some keywords you probably arent building backlinks using these keywords in the anchor text. To get Google to rank you on a broader base of keywords you need to create backlinks using these keywords in the anchor text and then pinging the links so they get indexed in Google quicker. you should also build 20-40 links per keyword you are really wanting to focus on. Hope that helps.

How many links and for what keyword are an important factor. If you are doing the SEO yourself, then look over your top 10 competitors for targeted keywords. Find out how many backlinks and of what quality that have. After that you'll have your own measure how you should plan to achieve the target rank.

On-page optimization should be done properly. Sites structure and content also help rank faster. As you know there are so many variables, if you don't have enough experience you can consult a professional about your next step.

Based upon the information you provided, I think you are right in the sense of the Panda Update. It does affect your site as a whole from what I have seen. I have seen sites where they use to rank #1 (the particular page had good content, quality back links, and optimized on page), but after the Panda update their site was no where to be found in the first 100 pages of results.

As an experiment (as one particular case was a client of mine) we took out 3 pages out of the 7 pages that the site contained. Those 3 pages would violate the Panda Update, and about 3 weeks later that page that previously held the #1 ranking for the targeted keyword was found on the 6th page of results.

At the same time I would also agree with the other warriors that have replied to this thread, that there might not be enough quality back links to that particular page using anchor keywords/key phrases.

    Hope this helps!

How old is the site? Is there a good amount of unique, quality, optimized content on the page you're trying to rank?

      Hey John,
Site is 1.5 years old, has about 200 pages of optimized content. I have recently read alot about interlinking your site, similar to the way wiki does, and how those links count as backlinks. So far I have seen a moderate increase in some of my traffic.

I am not new to SEO by any stretch, I think this site is among a couple of others that I own that just seem to not rank for keywords that I should logically rank for.

There was a small experiment conducted by Google about 6 months ago where they displayed a map of some theatre seating chart for the query ", "hiybbprqag", in an effort to see if Bing was copying their search results.

My point is that I have written some articles that are as rare/unique as the term hiybbprqag, for which I am on page 433, and there is not a single other person who has written about it. Why would I not logically rank for these keywords?

Thank you all for your responses, I think I will just continue to work on link building and building more content.

I have experienced the very same thing (and actually posted a new topic about). My site even has my keyword in the URL, and it has dropped off the google radar for that keyword from rank 3 to oblivion.

I can think of the following reasons:
        • Google thinks I am keyword stuffing. However, my content is so specialized that I have to use certain language, and so I have to repeat certain words because there is simply no other way of saying this.
        • I have an anchor layer with about 5-10 articles, to which I am backlinking via social bookmarking sites. The articles link to my main site with the keyword. Similar articles are on my blog in my site. Google treats my articles as duplicate content, maybe they are not different enough. But they are by no means spun articles, again, they just use very special language.
        • I made mistakes with the Thesis theme SEO features on which the blog part of my site is built that have triggered a google alarm.
All that being said, I wrote to google about this and they answered me that no manual anti-spam measured have been taken against my site. not sure how to fix this either, but I am looking for a solution.

Well i am new warrior. Some niche don't respond easily. If you are have moderate competition keyword. Drop 300-400 bookmarking and hundreds of forum profile link and do some article marketing. You will see progress in next 30-60 days.
    Thanks

You would think that a person starting a thread would at least try and respond to some of the advice being offered.

It seems funny how you get people starting a thread looking for advice and when people offer it up or want to know more specifics to try to help them better they just seem to disappear.

    hi

you have to think of how your site can build trust.

once you have a plan, follow it and youll succeed.

I learned this from a fellow warrior. Stick wit hthe basics, gain trust to your pages and youll rank.
