Ranking about directory sites

Hi,
I'm new so i hope i am doing this right. I have had a search around but cant find any relevant threads on this.
We are electricians in Australia and have recently set up a website. I am working hard learning SEO to get it to rank high locally but it seems that in all the targeted local google searches directory sites rank higher then a company website. There is also heaps of them - hotfrog, startlocal, electricalfinder etc etc. So ranking on the first page above these directory sites seems to me - with my very limited knowledge - next to impossible? Due to all the links and info the directories have?
Is it impossible to rank above large directory sites and if so can point me in the right direction to work out how?
